Every rural child deserves the same opportunity as urban children.
A seed that sprouts in soft soil grows into a tree, and nobody is surprised. When a seed pushes its way up beside a rock, the credit belongs to the hands that nurtured it. Anubhuti is that second kind of seed — sown beside a rock in Bramhapuri, a small town in Maharashtra's Chandrapur district, and tended with patience and perseverance ever since.
In 2005 we left Delhi and settled in Bramhapuri, determined to work in education. We took on a hard brief: to open an English medium school without any strong financial backing, built around an innovative teaching-learning method, for children of economically weaker families who could never afford the exorbitant fees of the existing English medium schools.
We formed a non-governmental organisation, the Vasu Foundation, and opened a school under its banner in 2006 — with just five students. Bramhapuri is a town of roughly 36,000 people, far from the places where such schools are expected to survive. This one has.

The school has run with strict adherence to the values it began with — modest tuition fees, no refundable deposit demanded from parents, and a simple, decent building put up without any ostentation. The learning environment is built to give students trust and confidence, and to keep a close, continuing dialogue with their parents. Through every difficulty, the Anubhuti family has held on to that character.
Everyone at Anubhuti believes in a comprehensive, innovative method of education grounded in practical work experience. Participatory learning is the backbone of everything that happens here: children make the shapes they are studying, stitch, visit workshops, weigh and measure and build. Understanding is the goal; marks follow from it.
We want to change a settled but false notion — that an excellent school is only the one with a modern, attractive building, luxurious libraries and laboratories, expensive uniforms, exorbitant fees and a plethora of subjects. A school is its teaching. Everything else is decoration.
We are still in need of financial support to complete our school building, to expand into new classes, and for many similar purposes. We sowed a seed beside a rock. It has grown into a young sapling. To make sure it grows properly, we want the support of innumerable hands.

Children are still learning on the floor of an unfinished room. We have kept fees modest and asked no deposit of parents, and that choice has a cost — the building is not complete, and new classes need space.
